Despite depicting an anti-fascist resistance, the film downplays the extent of Nazi tyranny in many areas of German society. The film showed footage of Nazi camps which were much worse than the camps shown in the more recent and still highly controversial documentary, Conspiracy of Silence (1973), which was released at the same time as "Downfall".

The film was released in the United States on October 27, 2007, and in the United Kingdom on November 18, 2007. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Its release coincides with more than a decade of anti-fascist and pacifist protest movements and a growing awareness of the Holocaust and other historic genocides." On April 18, 2014, the film was named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Plot
The film is set in the final days of the Third Reich, during World War II in Berlin. The movie begins with Hitler's death and the Nazi regime's establishment of a totalitarian state in Germany. The Nazi Party (N.S.D.) and its paramilitary organizations (the SS) gain power in a coup d'état against a weakened Reichswehr (German Army) in 1934. In 1936, Hitler becomes dictator of Germany and all other nations are under Nazi rule. The many parties that oppose the Nazi Party are systematically eradicated.
Despite their ruthless censorship, the Nazis seek to portray themselves as a more benevolent government than the Communists who have their own extensive propaganda machine in the Soviet Union.
As many as 800 million people were killed or died of starvation during the war, and 6 million were murdered by the Nazis themselves.
The film starts with a newly elected German President (Erich Maschke) visiting the Chancellery. As he walks by a guard of honor, a Soviet officer gives him the German national colors, the swastika, and the words "Germany, Adolf Hitler, 1933." Hitler watches this and immediately orders the building to be made ready for his imminent return from a speech at the Sportpalast.
